Everyone will study Core Subjects: English Language and Literature, Maths,
Science, Physical Education, Computer Studies, Modern Foreign Languages (French, German or Spanish), Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE), and Religious Studies.
You also study 5 option subjects. You must also select one reserve subject.
You have 5 decisions to make:
Choose your Language
Everybody will continue to study at least one language in Year 9 as part of your Core Curriculum. If you have been studying one foreign language in Year 8, you will continue with the same language in Year 9. If you have been studying two foreign languages in Year 8, you will also need to decide which of them you will continue to learn in Year 9 – or if you want to continue with both (by using one of your options slots for the second language).
Choose History or Geography.
Every student will have to choose either History or Geography as one of their options in Year 9. You can choose both subjects if you wish, which would fill two of your option slots.
Choose your 4 other options subjects.
Give this careful thought because there are many subjects you won’t be able to study a subject in Year 10 and 11 unless you have studied it in Year 9. You cannot choose both Music and Music Technology, both Art (Fine) and Art (Textiles), both D&T (Graphics) and D&T (Resistant Materials), or a foreign language you have not studied before.
Choose one subject as a Reserve
We will do our best to give you your first choices, but it is not always possible. The reserve choice is a subject you would like to study if one of your option courses is not available.
Decide between Core PE or Pre-GCSE PE / Sports Studies
If you do the Pre-GCSE PE/Sport Studies Course in Year 9 you will have the opportunity to opt for either GCSE PE or Cambridge National Sport Studies in Years 10 and 11. If you do not choose the Pre-GCSE PE/Sports Studies Course in Year 9, you will continue with Core PE lessons throughout Years 9, 10 and 11.
