When completing an application form in relation to an Upper Pay Range role for teachers, the relevant definitions for the purposes of the school’s pay policy are:

• ‘Highly competent’ – there is evidence to show a minimum of 4 good/outstanding lesson observations including data which shows students’ good/better progress over time. The teacher is able to demonstrate in students’ performance data that he/she has contributed to the improved practice of colleagues effectively fulfilling a mentoring or coaching role and thereby contributing to whole school improvement.
• ‘Substantial’ – the teacher is able to demonstrate, through the evidence available, that he/she has played a critical role in the life of the school by providing a role model for teaching and learning and/or making a distinctive contribution to the raising of students’ standards and/or taking advantage of professional development and uses the outcomes effectively as evidence in an improvement in students’ learning.
