Years 7 & 8 Curriculum - PE

Physical Education

Year 7

Purpose

Our PE curriculum is designed to encourage mass participation.  We have a ‘Team Brookfield’ ethos where everybody can contribute and make an impact in every lesson.  Inclusivity for all, whether they are sporty or not.  Although being a performer and developing fitness levels are important, we also develop mental and social aspects of the whole student.  Our curriculum is designed to educate the student in a sequenced number of learning objectives throughout the year.

Content

Learning objective 1 focuses upon the anatomy of the body (bones and muscles) whilst teaching them the importance of warming up how different components of fitness are important for all sports.

Learning objective 2 then progresses on to the principles of gameplay within competitive situations across a variety of different sports.

Learning objective 3 finishes the year by looking at the Brookfield Sporting Characteristics, and how these can be applied to a variety of activities.

Throughout all these learning objectives we try to embed the core Brookfield Characteristics during lessons.  Characteristics such as resilience and leadership can easily be demonstrated within the PE environment.

Sports

From September to April, four activities are taught from – rugby, handball, football, netball, badminton, gymnastics and table tennis.

From May – July, athletics is taught, and one other activity from – rounders, cricket, softball, tennis.

Assessment

Initially in September students complete a variety of activities to assess their basic sporting ability and motivation to succeed in PE.  They are then put in to sets from these initial lessons.

Students are continually assessed throughout each Learning Objective and will be graded as Emerging, Developing, Securing, Mastering.  Assessment takes place via teacher observations and questioning; also, students will formally demonstrate their theoretical knowledge by completing a short written knowledge check.  This will take place at the start of a PE lesson; a revision PowerPoint is on the Student Portal to support the theory taught in class.

Co-curricular

We also offer an extensive co-curricular programme with clubs and sports across the year.

Year 8

Purpose

In Year 8 we continue to ensure all students have the same opportunity to develop theoretical knowledge as well as improve their practical skills in a variety of sports/activities.  We continue to focus on our students being of good mental, physical and social health, plus developing important skills that can be transferred across curriculums.

Content

Learning Objective 4 looks at improving general fitness, and how PE benefits students with their physical, mental and social health.

Learning Objective 5 works on the ability of the student to identify strengths and areas for improvement in their own performance as well as other performers.  We then practice communication skills to enable students to give brief constructive feedback to their peers.

Learning Objective 6 – this builds on LO3 from Year 7, where we look to embed the Olympic and Paralympic values in lessons, and aim for students to show these values when participating.

Throughout each Learning Objective we will ensure that students have a good understanding of values such as sportsmanship and sporting etiquette. They will know what a good role model looks like in PE and will demonstrate the skills and qualities of a role model, in line with the Brookfield Character ladder.

Sports

From September to April, four activities are taught from – rugby, handball, football, netball, badminton, gymnastics and table tennis.

From May – July, athletics is taught, and one other activity from – rounders, cricket, softball and tennis.

The skills taught in Years 7 & 8 also provide an insight in GCSE PE and Cambridge National Sport Studies.  Students in Year 8 will have the option to select a pre-GCSE/CN class to be able to make an informed decision on selecting a course in PE moving into Year 10.

Co-curricular

We also offer an extensive co-curricular programme with clubs and sports across the year.
