Years 10 & 11 Curriculum - Textiles
AQA 8204
General
Students must have studied Textiles in Year 9 in order to select this course at GCSE. The course will provide students with a range of creative, exciting and stimulating opportunities to explore their interest in Design and Textiles. Students will use and explore a range of Textile processes and techniques to help them produce personal and purposeful outcomes. The course is suited to those students who have a passion and interest in Textiles and who are willing to produce work at home, as well as in school. The course can be time consuming, and it will require students to work on their coursework each week as homework. Therefore, a good home learning record throughout Year 9 is essential.
Content
Students will have the opportunity to study 2 or more of the following areas:
- Costume design
- Interior textiles
- Printed and dyed fabrics
- Fabric construction
- Stitched and embellished fabrics (machine/hand embroidery)
Students will explore different textiles artists and other sources across the course to inform their ideas and development. It is a requirement of AQA that all students include a minimal amount of drawing and writing in their work.
Assessment
8204/C Controlled Assessment – worth 60% of total mark
Students will complete two controlled assessment projects before Christmas of Year 11. In each project they will be expected to respond to a theme by recording from observation (using textile processes and techniques) imagery relevant to their intentions. They will study appropriate artists/designers/sources and use the work to help them experiment with composition/media to design purposeful ideas. Students will then produce an outcome(s) to complete each project.
8204/X Examination – worth 40% of total mark
In Year 11 students receive an examination paper. Students will complete preliminary studies and ideas over an 8 to 10 week period. They will then produce a final outcome in a 10 hour period, unaided, under supervision. At the end of the exam period they must hand in their exam sketchbook and final outcome.
Resources
Students will need several A4 Sketchbooks, as well as other basic stationary. These can be bought using Scopay. Each student will be expected to make three final pieces over the course. Some fabric and other resources might need to be resourced from textile craft shops, depending on student intentions. The cost of resources could range from £10-£60+. It is also highly recommended that students have access to a sewing machine at home.
