Changing subjects or courses
If you needed certain grades to get into a college or sixth form and you missed these, speak to them as soon as possible to find out if they will still accept you. If they won't accept you to the original course(s) you applied to, find out about similar courses they offer. If you did better than expected in a particular GCSE subject, or you've been rethinking your goals and ambitions, speak to your college or sixth form as soon as possible to see if switching Level 3/A-level subjects is possible. Provided you meet the entry requirements, there are still spaces on the courses, and there are no conflicts in your timetable, this shouldn’t be a problem.
Changing sixth form or college
If your original college or sixth form won’t accept you to the courses you applied to and they don’t offer any similar courses you’re interested in, look around at other nearby institutions. These might have lower entry requirements or a wider range of courses to consider.
Many of the local colleges will be open for phone calls and email queries over the exam results period. See below for a full list of links to the college websites and contact information. They may also have dedicated lines so check the best way to contact them on their website.
Appealing a GCSE grade
If you want to query a grade – perhaps one is unusually low compared with others and you weren’t expecting this, or you’ve narrowly missed a grade boundary – read the enclosed GCSE Results Query guidance for how to get in touch. Do this as soon as possible, ideally, on results day itself when you pick up your results. Please be advised, but there could be a charge for appealing grades.
GCSE retakes
If you don’t achieve at least a grade 4 (formerly a C) in your maths and English GCSEs, you’ll have to resit these to proceed to Level 3 qualifications. Resits for these can be taken when at college, sixth form or alongside an apprenticeship.

Appeals
If you are not happy about a particular exam result, it is possible to consider some of the ‘Post Results Services’ provided by exam boards. These include ‘access to scripts’ which provides a copy of marked papers, a ‘clerical check’ to ensure all parts of the paper have been marked and totalled correctly, and a ‘review of marking’ which will mean a second examiner will review the paper/recording again to identify genuine marking errors or unreasonable marking. These services can have a substantial cost to them. Please see costs below. Our exams officers can deal with any queries relating to these services.
Review of Marking
Deadline 15th September
AQA - £42.00 per unit/component
OCR - £61.50 per unit/component
Edexcel/Pearson - £46.70 per unit/component
WJEC - £40.00
Clerical re-check
Deadline 15th September
AQA - £9.05 per unit/component
OCR - £10.75 per unit/component
Edexcel/Pearson - £13.10 per unit/component
WJEC - £11.00 per unit
Access to script
Deadline 2nd September
AQA – Free
OCR – Free
Pearson/Edexcel – Free
WJEC - Free
Key dates to bear in mind are that requests for ‘access to scripts’ need to be made by Monday 2nd September, and requests for other services must be made by Monday 15th September. This will provide sufficient time for our Exams Officers to have student’s complete the necessary paperwork before the exam board deadline.

In a small number of cases the school will request and pay for some of the Post Results Services, for instance a ‘review of marking’, but these will be limited to where we have strong reason to believe an error in marking may have occurred, or where a student has achieved very close to a grade 4 in maths or English and by achieving a grade 4 they would not have to retake the qualification at college. The school may also fund a ‘review of marking if a student is very close to achieving a grade that is required to access the course they have applied for at college.
Please bear in mind that we would never allow financial issues to prevent a student from pursuing a ‘review of marking’ if there was a good case to pursue it. Please get in touch if this is the case.
If you have any further queries please contact our Exams Officer at the following email address: exams@brookfield.hants.sch.uk
We must also provide a policy for candidates to appeal our decision not to fund or request a ‘review of marking’. That policy is here.
Yours faithfully
Mr Pease
Deputy Headteacher
